Heyman Woodworth was founded in the late 1990s at a time when the armed forces went through a fairly drastic post-cold war drawdown. At that time there was still a sense amongst some, within the commercial world, that officers could be strong confident leaders but that they had no commercial experience and therefore would not fit easily into non-military roles.  

The reality is that almost all of our commissioned officer candidates have received a university education. Many have engineering degrees – aeronautical, electronics, electrical and mechanical, marine and civil engineering. Others are mathematicians, or economists or geologists and many others have strong language skills. Their whole career has involved risk analysis and risk mitigation.  Likewise, a career in the military will have involved them in all sorts of project management and logistics roles.

Military careers vary from a short service contract of three years to a full term career of thirty years or more so, depending on length of service, there is inevitably going to be a spectrum of experience and capability.

Typically, many of our candidates seem to leave the forces at the age of 28 to say 34 and so after a six to eight year career they will have gained valuable leadership and management skills and yet still be young enough to dovetail into the commercial world with their university peers.

The feedback we get is mostly positive: ‘we like them because they make things happen’; ‘they recognise when there is an issue that is holding back an organisation and will determine a means of solving the issue’; ‘they are confident in dealing with all stakeholders, whether it be at board level or shop floor level’; ‘they are comfortable being team leaders or team members’.

Back in the late 1990s we tended to take on commissioned officers only, as candidates, but we came to realise what a wealth of talent there was to be had amongst the more technical senior non-commissioned officers that were leaving the forces. Individuals with practical experience of managing projects in a variety of disciplines: communications, electrical and mechanical, health and safety, logistics, civil construction and associated compliance and testing in all these disciplines.

Finally, in working with clients we are particularly keen to have a close consultative relationship. We recognise that job specifications tend to list technical requirements and experience, but the requirement rarely touches on the issues that need to be addressed and sorted out by the future employee, nor the soft skills that will be required.  Our aim is submit no more one, two or three candidates who have been thoroughly researched, interviewed and assessed before they reach the client. That saves you, the client, a considerable amount of time and money by reducing your internal HR process.
