Sector profiles

Defence & Security

Heyman Woodworth is a recruitment consultancy that has extensive experience in recruiting for Defence and Security companies.  Our clients range from large Prime Systems Integrators to niche suppliers and specialist consultancies.  We recruit directors and managers for both UK based and international roles

The strong reputation that we have built with client companies is based on the fact that we have real domain knowledge in these areas.  In the United Kingdom the Ministry of Defence (MOD) has embraced a doctrine based on the concept of network enabled capability (NEC) with major implications for force structures and also future equipment programmes whether they are command and control, ISTAR or weapon systems.  However, changes in the underlying approach to equipment procurement are not always immediately recognised by suppliers.  There are also numerous parallels with the rapidly evolving requirements of Homeland Security, where detailed understanding of defence-related processes and programmes is often a key ingredient.

Heyman Woodworth consultants have experience of working within the MOD’s  procurement chain and also within the defence and security industries.  Our consultants understand what it takes for suppliers to win business in what is often a complex scenario.  Through effective recruiting, we can help companies to enhance their own capabilities.  We can find you the people to deliver focused business development, to develop a mature and well-informed approach to bid management, to achieve a well-developed understanding of how procurement priorities are decided, and to keep abreast of some of the politics of defence procurement. In short, we can help your company grow.

Whilst many larger defence and security related companies are already well networked into the MOD and have a deep understanding of equipment programme issues, the situation is not always the same in SMEs.  Many mid-sized and smaller companies have equipment or support services which could provide genuine added value to the customer (MODUK) or to PSIs responsible for major programmes, but finding the best way to inform and influence the relevant decision-makers and budget-holders is not straightforward.  Subcontracting through PSIs is often the best way for SMEs to gain entry into the defence market, but immediately raises the question of ‘how do we grow from here?’
